I love April! Growing things come back to life, but not so much this Spring. Mother Nature played a mean April Fool's joke on us. We're getting Winter-like storms here in Southern Ontario - really nasty today - freezing rain, snow, wind, and rain!! Yesterday they got the same stuff in Central and Northern Ontario, only worse! They got damaging freezing rain which caused major power outages, damage, and rain - a BUNCH! Some still without power, and this is day 3.

April Fools Day has been around a long time - dates back to 1698 in Britain. It seems to be losing interest around here - never hear of anybody playing jokes anymore. Just as well. We used to play harmless jokes on "Greenhorns" to the trade;

"Fetch me a 'sky-hook', or a 'left-handed monkey wrench'" (They would search, and search but never find the things - because there is no such tool as a monkey wrench, or a sky-hook!)

On Tuesday, April 2nd, around 4:30PM Trump plans to play another mean joke on the whole World when he announces a "Reciprocal Teriff" on all country's with whom U.S.A. does business. But, April Fools is past, and Trump is the "biggest fool at last!"

*

And finally, we have a little riddle for you: My 50th Birthday was April 1st. Europe was my 'birthplace'. I was 'adopted' by Canada in 1975. U.S.A. would have nothing to do with me, and still don't.

I'm 'perfect', I'm 'accurate', and I'm easy (if you get the point) I'm neither 'male' nor 'female'. My initials are M.S.

Some pleasant thoughts about April; Nova Scotia Sue has Avril as her middle name. My Sister, Evelyn was born on April 4th (deceased). My 4th puppy love was named Avril, and if I ever marry again, and we make a girl baby, she will be named Avril.

Hello fellow Squamidians. April showers bring freezing rain and more snow. Winter likes to get another shot at us in early April. This year she’s going all out. Long range forecast isn’t much better. I’m a true Canadian, I talk/complain about the weather. I took Evy to the airport March 16 in the evening to catch a 12am flight to the Philippines for 3 months. I then continued on to Carol and Al’s for 2 night stay. Carol put on an amazing feast. Gale contributed. Tim and Heidi visited as well. Some nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews dropped by for a visit. It was great.

The resort Max worked for was bought by a corporation. Original plan was to stay open all winter but the new owners suddenly decided to close up to renovate. Max went to help some friends for the month of February so we had Harley. He’s a gentle giant. A cross between mastiff and lab. Max started a new job in construction this past week so I get Harley during the day time. I’m happy with that. Dogs are like regular grandchildren in the fact you can spoil them then send them home. Phoebe and Pat had to take Jasper to sick kids hospital to get his tonsils and adenoids out. His tonsils were growing inward and were much larger than the doctor expected. The operation was a success and he seems to be enjoying eating popsicles. He likely will have a growth sprout soon. He was fairly small for his age. They should arrive home this (Thursday) afternoon.

I really miss Evy but at least I can eat all the pork I want and can renovate the bedrooms. She is in for quite a surprise when she gets home. Take care and stay safe everyone.

In Canada, when there is nothing else to talk about we always have the weather. Last Sunday I’m sure all of you heard about the big ice storm. We didn’t have it bad like Barrie but our little corner of Stanley park were without power for a few hours. Parts of South Bruce only had powered restored today (Thursday). On Tuesday I took a picture of the crocuses in my backyard to send to Jackie. Jackie and Jim handed out flower bulbs as wedding favours 25 years ago last fall. They are still blooming. On Wednesday I took a second picture, as you can see the flowers are covered in snow. Now, one day later it is 19 degrees out. I’ve included all 3 pictures. By Tuesday the high is predicted to be -4. Mother Nature is giving us a real roller coaster ride. I’m just hoping for nice weather on our traditional egg colouring / wood chopping at the Homestead on Good Friday.

Take care, Carol

Hi Squids:

Well, the stork arrived sooner than expected. 7 new baby pigs arrived Monday, March 31, avoiding any reference to April Fool’s Day.Everyone calls them piglets, but when I was a kid, they were called shoats. What’s in a name A pig by any other name would smell as sweet.Here are some pictures:

I discovered last Friday after sending out the weekly Squid that my email was not working properly. This issue doesn’t seem to be related in any way to the email problem Russ is having. What was happening, or to be more accurate, wasn’t happening, was that I could not send or receive to myself or anyone else on the Shaw mail network. I could not send to Sue’s computer, and she could not send to mine. This didn’t make any sense at all. Nothing had changed on either of our computers. If something had, I could find and fix it. So, after several frustrating days I finally went onto the Shaw mail sections of their site and logged into my account so I could hunt through various settings etc. What I wanted to do was to talk to an actual person but ever since Shaw was taken over by Rogers, that seems to be an impossibility, and for what its worth, ever since the takeover not just mail but TV and Internet have all been a bit flaky.

What they want you to do is hunt though masses of pages of pre-answered questions, hunt through data bases and so on and find the fix yourself without actually bothering them. All I got was frustrated. At one point a suggestion was to try logging into Webmail and seeing if that worked. It did, so I tried sending a few test mails to myself and they got to me. So far so good. What wasn’t there was the emails that had been sent to my by me such as last week’s Squid. But, I had been able to mail myself through Webmail so I then tried in from my actual mail program on my computer and low and behold, it was working. As far as I know it still is but I have no idea why.

Sue’s sister Sherry is out here this week visiting. She has been out several times now over the past year. That is a good thing for Sue, and a very good thing for me.
