It's been great
reading
everyone's weekly report and keeping in touch. I'm doing
a trip out
west on the 1st of June. Warren is ready to go home
after almost 2
months in Nova Scotia. I decided to travel with him to
B.C. His
daughter Becky and family will be visiting us too. I
would love to
visit Doug while I’m there. I will get in touch when we
arrive. After one week in B.C. Warren and I will travel
by car to visit my
sister Michelle in Alberta. After losing my brother
Dennis 2 years
ago we feel the need to make more effort to see our
family.
Have a great summer
everyone!

From Wayne
Hi Squids.
A proof of life
picture
again. First ever 92nd birthday for me (Wayne). Left to
right;
Sylvia, me, Sonja, Kenny and Gabi.

Coming up are the
following:
Another calf, a visit by two of Sonja's university
people this month,
then Carol & Al in the first half of June, my son
David and his
partner Michele and maybe some younger people in July,
Sylvia's
Flower Girls from 1973 and who know who else.
Also we had another
six baby
pigs arrive a week or two ago, one as pictures below.

Here is Mr. Bean,
nearly a
month old but as frisky as anyone can imagine -- except
that since
this picture, he has become a steer and that took the
steam out of
his system.

See you in the fall

From Carol
Al and I are very
tired,
thanks to an amorous wood pecker. While trying to
attract a mate and
declare his territory the male likes to peck out a loud
drumming
noise. The woodpecker has discovered that metal down
spouts and metal
shutters make a much larger sound than pecking on trees.
For over a
week now a bird has decided that the shutters and
downspout beside
our bedroom window creates the perfect loud sound. He
starts before
dawn and continues on and off through out the day.
Sleeping becomes
impossible. I really hope he finds a mate soon.
We are going to
miss your
newsletter during the summer hiatus Doug. I know any of
us can do a
“reply all” to an old Squid if something exciting
happens during
the summer but I seem to have gotten too old for
excitement. Wishing
you a wonderful garage concert on the 7th, hope people
tape some of
it on their phones to share. Everyone else have a
wonderful summer.

From Doug
I’ve been on a
quest for
several years to find the right strings for my guitars
and finally
have an answer. And that is, there is no ‘right’ string.
There
seems to be ‘preferred strings’ but not absolute right
string.
One of the problems is that my guitars can be moody, do
have their
own opinions and character, and, they react differently
to different
conditions. I’ve noticed that the Martin prefers medium
gauge
strings in the winter but would rather have light gauge
strings in
the summer. The Gibson isn’t as picky about string gauge
and in
fact would like to stick with mediums all year round.
Both guitars
prefer the phosphor / bronze type over the 80/20
strings. The Martin
and Gibson both down right hate coated strings. Coated
strings are
supposed to last a lot longer than un-coated because
they resist
corrosion and oxidation, but, on my guitars they bring
out all sorts
of overtones and my ears hate overtones. Some people
like them but
not me.
I tend to
experiment with
different brands and types in that never ending quest.
And, because
the nearest music store is well over an hour’s drive
from here,
when I purchase strings I do it on line, from Long &
McQuade.
When doing so I order half a dozen sets of a given
string. Therefore
I end up with lots of string sets to choose from when
changing
strings. I also end up with string sets that I don’t
like,
obviously. Once in a while I’ll put a set of strings on
one of the
guitars that I don’t or didn’t like just to see if that
has
changed because there’s nothing to lose in doing so.
Thats what I
did this past week, I put a set of extended life strings
on the
Gibson and played it for about 15 minutes before I
couldn't stand it
anymore and removed them. Then, I put on a set of
strings that I knew
that guitar likes, and she was happy. I don’t often
change the
strings on a guitar twice in one day but it does happen.
How’s that
for writing about nothing?
This
is
the last week. Thanks you to all who contributed, and
to all who
participate. Barring some unforeseen situations we’ll
start up
again in about early September or some such time. If
there is
anything that needs to be shared in the mean time, I
can always send
out a ‘special’ addition. Same with you guys, you
could do the
same. Bye for now.
