From Doug
After two and a
half years, I
can actually see through my right eye. I’ve now seen
myself in the
mirror and am a bit taken back by how old and haggard I
look, I
assume what I saw was what everyone else is used to
seeing. However,
this frustrating journey seems to be almost over.
Two and a half
years ago I had
cataract surgery in both eyes. It went well for my left
eye but my
right eye never regained any sight, all I could see
through it was
dark blobs, no definition at all. The lens that was used
was very
expensive and supposed to be the latest greatest lens
and would give
the best possible vision. That sure didn’t work for me.
I waited a
year to see the specialist again and after waiting hours
in his
uncomfortable waiting room in the busy down town of
Vancouver, he
said Yup, you can’t see through it and it needs to be
replaced. So,
another year went by before I got the call to come in
for lens
replacement surgery. That also took place in Vancouver
where its
difficult and stressful to get to. I wrote about that a
few months
ago.
Sight was only
slightly
improved with the new, ‘standard’ lens. My vision was
brighter
but still blurry. Because my brain tries to blend what
the eyes see,
it would extend the apparent blurriness to include my
good eye. I’d
have to shut my right eye when driving so I could see
clearly. My
local optometrist said the problem was scarring in the
eye that could
be removed via laser surgery. Fine, but guess where I
would have to
go to have that done, Yup, back to the surgeon in
Vancouver. I got
the call for that, sat in the waiting room for who knows
how long
just to have him look into my eye and say “Yup”,
scarring. That
can easily be removed via laser. So, I had to make
another
appointment with him to have it done because of course
it couldn't be
done then and there. That would be too easy. The laser
appointment
was this past Tuesday. Another stressful trip down to
Broadway and
Willow in Vancouver. Another wait in the waiting room,
then I was
finally called in. Five minutes later it was done. It
wasn’t
pleasant but it was ok.
Now
I
can see. But its weird. The left eye can see distance
clearly but
needs reading glasses for up close. Thats what I was
told the right
eye would be but no, when my vision cleared I found it
can see up
close but not distance. Perhaps it was installed
backward ;).
Regardless, I’ll be having new glasses made that do
the corrections
for each eye and all should be good. As it is, I can
see well enough
to drive etc without wearing glasses so thats a good
thing. After two
and a half years there is finally an end in sight,
pardon the pun.
