Thanks Doug for all your flight pictures. It sure is amazing what you can do safely from your own computer.

I wonder why you prefer the night flying when you could be looking at the beautiful scenery. Although I know its more about operating the plane. I remember when you convinced me to take that 15 minute flying lesson years ago. It sure was thrilling and nerve racking at the same time and there wasn't much time to look at scenery.

I'm glad you aren't planning on doing the real thing anymore.

We are back at sawing more boards for our greenhouse we are building. We sure don't have a shortage of logs to work from. The greenhouse is a two year project so we are going at it slowly. Our weather this fall so far has been beautiful and the leaves are spectacular. Our road is finally all nicely paved and no more flag men everywhere.

Thanks everyone for contributing to the Squamidian. Its great to hear from so many.

GOOD NEWS!

From the outside it looked like an over-size chicken pen! But inside was something else - no chickens, just young 'chicks' - friendly, accommodating, and professional. But, first things first - Bettie and I had to use a washroom - immediately! Wheeoh! that chore accomplished, we were seated in a large, empty room with about 60 chairs. At the far end of the room was a large-screen TV and eye-testing posters on either side. I thought we were going to see a TV program - but no, I was called into one of the six labs along the side walls. On the left they were labelled A, B, C, and D - on the right the rooms were numbered, 1 to 3 - I was called into room #2 where the chick took pictures of my eyes. From there we were directed to another lab whee I was seated in the most comfortable chair in the whole clinic.

Then, I saw him. He was talking to an assistant. He was a young man, maybe 30 with a swarthy complexion, a black beard, and a full-head of black hair. My eyes dropped to his feet - he was wearing "caterpillar-green Crocks". He had remarkably-large feet- - both of which were about 14 inches long!! He entered the room, introduced himself, "Hi, I'm doctor Shasha" (so happy to find he had no accent, spoke quickly explaining the 'state' of my vision and what had caused the "pop" in my right eye) He mentioned about 5 things that may be to blame for the bleeding behind my eye. I picked-up on only 3.

High blood pressure; high sugars, and poor diet for a diabetic.

I confessed to the poor diet thing saying that when I don't feel like making a meal, or I'm not hungry, I fill-up on oatmeal cookies, washed -down with hot, clear, black tea.

"How often do you make a meal of cookies, and how many do you eat each time?" He asked. To which I shamefully replied, "Maybe twice a week, eating about 6 each time" (The truth be known, it's probably twice that!) I should know better. I've been a Type Two diabetic since 1968, and able to control it for many years with proper diet and regular exercise. You don't have to say it - I know what you're thinking!

"Your vision is improving since the problem was first detected a month ago. We have at least three choices for treatment; #1 Do nothing at this time. As long as it continues to improve. #2 Begin with the needles today, and on, and on. #3 We will monitor your condition, and if it continues to improve itself, revert to choice #1. You can always contact us if it gets worse"

Hallelujah!!! Thanks for your prayers fellow Squamidians!

Russ

PS Needless to say - I chose choice number1 - didn't want to leave you 'dangling'.🙂

How’s it going…..eh?

You probably saw on the news that it was a tad on the wet side out here in coastal BC. Well, those reports were true, it was so wet I’m surprised that there were no fish swimming around in the sky. After all, it was an ‘atmospheric river’ that targeted the south coast and pumped all that rain onto the area. We hear people say that we never had those atmospheric rivers before, that they are somehow some new kind of weather system. However, we use to have what was called a ‘Pineapple Express’ and it was and is exactly the same thing, just a different name. The new name, atmospheric river, is probably more descriptive and accurate. Either way, it was very wet for severals day with lots of flooding in the lower mainland. Up our way where we are on solid rock, it was just a big display of waterfalls all over the place as the runoff raced its way down hill.

In parts of the Lower Mainland there were lands slides as well as flooding. Many homes were destroyed and several lives were lost. And, this is still very early in the fall and winter storm season.

I have a new dentist. I didn’t want a new dentist because my old one is the best dentists I’ve ever had, with fingers that can perform magic as she works on some intricate procedure within the tight confines of a mouth. However, she had lost a lot of her staff during the pandemic and was on the verge of burnout as she worked seemingly endlessly administering to her patients on her own. Now, she has finally been able to bring in a new, young dentist to help her with her practice. I was hoping to stay on my old dentist’s list but found myself on the list for the new one. I had a dental appointment this week for some heavy duty work and was apprehensive about seeing a new, young woman, who it turns out Russ would approve of on first sight. However, this new, young lady has proven to be a winner, capable, skilled, and knowledgeable. I went in apprehensive and came out relieved and satisfied that I’m in good hands. My old dentist is of course still there and I had a nice chat with her and was able to let her know that her new dental partner meets my discerning approval.

It has been a very long time since I’ve tried to record a song. So long in fact that I had to re-figure out how to do it, with perhaps questionable results. Regardless, I had come across an old country-ish song that I had liked back in the 80’s that was done by a very under rated duo called the ‘Sweethearts Of The Rodeo’. They had made it big, just not BIG type of big. This song is called ‘Chains Of Gold’ and was written to be sung from the female point of view so I had to change the words a bit here and there but thats ok. Besides, at my age, what difference does it make? As per the way I’ve always done these recordings, it’s just me and my guitar plus a few more of me’s and my guitars. Otherwise it would be pretty boring. So, here it is, follow the link and give it a listen. Hopefully I’ll be able to do a bare bones video version in the near future.

The audio version.
