Hey
there,
Looks
like
we’ve just about run out of time. My intent is
to hit the road
at the crack of dawn Sunday morning. I may
even be a few miles down
the road as the eastern sky starts to show
signs of daylight as I’d
like to be well out of Southern Ontario and
into Northern Ontario by
the end of the day. Wawa is my target for the
first night back on the
road. It’s very doable if weather and traffic
allow.
It’s
been
interesting being in KW at this time of year.
Most crops are off
the fields, the trees are turning colour and
the weather is doing all
sorts of things to remind us of the time of
year. We ended up being
here during Octoberfest which was not the
intent, I simply forgot
about it. We ended up being here for
Thanksgiving. Again, not my
intent, I hadn’t thought about that either. We
did have a nice
dinner at Gale’s. That was great. I found
myself having the
opportunity to visit with Russ for a few
hours. That was worth the
whole trip. What happened was Sue was going
with her sister up to
Kincardine to visit her sister’s daughter and
it occurred to us
that I could tag along and be dropped off as
Russ’s place would not
be very far from there and that’s what we did.
I spent several
hours there enjoying his wit and conversation.
On
Tuesday
we headed up to Tobermory, to what had been
their family
cottage. It is now her sisters. I’ve always
loved that part of
Ontario, the Bruce Peninsula. The cottage is
on Warner Bay, just
south of the Tub, is comfortable and cosy. We
headed back down on
Wednesday and took the opportunity to stop in
for a visit with
brother Gary and Evelin in Wiarton where we
managed to bum a free
lunch. The thing for me with the drive up and
back is seeing the
farms and countryside. It is so very different
from the mountain
scenery out eyes are used to.
And
then
there is the get-together at ‘the homestead’
on Saturday.
That of course hasn’t happened yet but we are
looking forward to
seeing everyone. After that it’s just a matter
of getting ready to
hit the road and then doing just that on
Sunday morning. Next week
should be business as usual as far as the
Squid is concerned. I
figure 5 days on the road will get us home
unless there are weather
issues in which case it could take a day
longer. We won’t know
until then. And regardless of weather and fall
scenery, I’m looking
forward to getting back into the north and the
west to get away from
the miserable southern Ontario rageweed.

Another
benefit
of growing old
Bettie
drives
me to all my appointments - I buy her a
tank-full of gasoline
periodically.
It's
Monday
noon, the Canadian Tire gas bar in Kincardine
is busy as usual
- only one person at the cash register (a
cute, young blonde) is
rushed off her feet!
"pump
#4",
says I when approaching her.
"That'll
be
$57.89 please" she purrs. I pay with my debit
card.
"Is
there
anything else I can do for you today?"
"Yes,
you
could give me a big hug" I say as a joke -
without
hesitation, this sweet, young chick comes from
behind the counter and
applies a "warm fuzzy" for as least four
Mississippies.
Looking over her shoulder, a man and woman in
line behind me, were
smiling broadly as if in approval.
"I'm
94
- never been hugged like that for many, many
years!" I
announce loudly.
Getting
back
in the car, I proudly tell Bettie what had
just happened - she
replies,
"It's
a
wonder you didn't get your face slapped, and
called a 'dirty old
man'!"
Never
gave
that a thought.
Russ.
