The Squamidian Report – May 6 / 17

The Ontarion
Hi All,
Of late it has been so uneventful that its easier to tell you want I
didn't do rather that what I did do. I didn't go to Lillooet. Its that
simple. We had a very rare nice day this past Thursday. At least part
of the day was nice with warm temps (almost unheard of) and enough
breaks in the clouds to let the sun through (almost unheard of). So, I
figured it was way past time to do a little day trip on the bike. My
intention was to ride to Lillooet for lunch then turn around and ride
back. This would of course take me up through Whistler and Pemberton,
and then over the Duffy. However, I got away a bit later than I'd have
liked to so I figured I'd reassess my plans once I reached Pemberton.
When I got there I decided to have a bit of lunch and then I did a
visual check of the sky. The forecast was for rain and thunderstorms to
move in by evening but the sky off to the southeast was already showing
signs of a high overcast building up.
It would take an hour and a half to cross over the Duffy and then an
hour and a half to come back to Pemberton. Thats three hours according
to my calculations. My decision was to head back south. I could 'do the
Duffy' some other day when I had more time and when the weather was
going to hold for at least a full day. The ride up had been quite nice
and the ride back was equally nice. It felt good to be out on the bike
on a ride going somewhere else for a change besides the usual Horseshoe
Bay. I got home before the afternoon traffic got too bad and the
building thunderstorms actually held off until late evening. But
interestingly, on the 6 pm TV news they were reporting that an
avalanche had come down by Duffy Lake, closing that highway for an
undetermined time. Had I continued on I would have been stuck on the
other side of the slide area and forced to spend the night in Lillooet
while waiting for the highway to re-open or to head south down to Hope
and then come in through the Fraser Valley. Either way I wouldn't have
gotten home until sometime Friday which in itself would not be a
problem but the weather would have been. Either way, any riding I'd
have done on Friday would have been through a cold hard rain. Not fun
at all. So, I didn't go to Lillooet for lunch and thats ok. Perhaps
I'll try again next week. Weather permitting. By the way, turned out
they didn't get the slide cleared and the intended timeframe has been
pushed back to Saturday.
I'm sure lots of people didn't do lots of things, and thats the one I could think of.
