The Squamidian Report – Sept. 12 / 15

Issue #694

Hi All,

You know, sometimes coming up with a topic for this Squid is as difficult as coming up with an idea for a song. Seems the well is dry more often than not and this weeks seems to be a dry well week. I guess I could tell you that I'm not at all happy with the Michelin tires that are on my motorcycle. I had been running Dunlop tires and they performed quite well. Then, because the OEM Dunlop tires are stupid expensive and their aftermarket American Elite tires, while not quite as expensive are still more costly than some of the other makes, I had switched to the Michelin Commander 2's which were supposed to be a great tire. And yes, they handle very nicely but it turns out they wear out very quickly. I've only put 22,000 clicks on my front tire and the tread is down to the wear bars. Not good, very disappointing. So, I decided to go back to the Dunlop A E's which should get close to double wear that the Michelin's seem to be getting. To that end I ordered a new front tire through our local Yamaha dealer and 2 days later it was in, and on. Funny how easily you can feel the difference, different tires make when riding, or driving for that matter. Anyway, I shouldn't have to worry about the rubber under my bike for a season or two now.

Oh, we figured out how to use our share of the reward for that stollen dirt bike we and a neighbour found, we decided to utilize it, or part there of, to take ourselves out for dinner in celebration of 84 years of marriage. A very little known fact was the fact that a few days ago marked 42 years, but of courser that applies to both of us, hence, 84. Anyway, we went to the only place that we would go out to for dinner, the gondola. They were having a wine tasting evening which we were not at all interested in, but the 'normal' restaurant function was also available and we sat out on the upper deck, surrounded by sun lit mountains and enjoyed the food as well as the classical orchestra that was playing. And of course we went there on the bike with it's new tire so it was a very nice evening. It was packed up there but we had made reservations so we had a nice table to ourselves which was not at all a surprise because that place tends to treat us pretty good. Sort of like VIP's a lot of the time. Kinda cool.

Then, after we got home and as the sun was finally dropping below the ridge to the west, we drove down to Porteau Cove to enjoy the early night sky and the ocean. That made for a nice end to the evening, except for one thing.... the highway will be closed on Saturday morning for a stupid bicycle race from the city to Whistler. How they can close a major highway that is the only road or highway from point A to point B is beyond me but they do. I guess its because the bicycle lobby is so strong out here that they can get away with anything. That race basically shuts down the town because no one can get in or out or even cross the highway. I digress. Because the highway will be shut down, all the Friday evening crazy people headed for Whistler from the city, and all the Saturday morning crazy people headed for Whistler are headed there at the same time. That makes being on or any where near the highway scary, dangerous and stressful. However, we got home ok although we certainly saw our share of stupid stuff being done by crazy, stupid, impatient drivers. Anyway, aside from that, it was a great week and a great evening.
