The Squamidian Report – July 5 / 08
Issue #319
THE ONTARION PEPORT
Hello
everyone!
Doug did
say that there would be no Squamidian report this week but I figure I should
make up for missing last weeks deadline. Although we’ll all miss his witty
banter I hope he’s pleasantly surprised that I’m at least making an attempt to
keep us all in reading material in his absence.
Sorry I missed out on sending in a Report
last week. I guess I just got behind in my weekly duties and by the time I
realized what was happening Doug had sent out the Squamidian early as promised
and I had missed my deadline. He kindly covered my butt by letting it be known
that I was on holidays. I just hadn’t contacted him at all (which is unusual)
through the week and I guess he figured I was out of town somewhere! LOL!
Any other week I’d have still had the
Friday to get my mind in gear and write my column but I guess I was “lost in
space” as they say when you’re temporarily an airhead! (Did I say
“temporarily”?) Hmmmmm?
Oh well,
we all have those moments I guess!
***
I just finished watching the news and it
seems that every night they are reporting more serious crimes in our region.
I’m sure that Uncle Russ will agree that there were very few hand gun incidents
when he was a police officer. Although I can recall about a half dozen fire
arms related shootings in the 29 years I was on the Fire Dept. Most of those
however were suicide incidents or attempts at suicide. I don’t recall any of
these being committed with a hand gun. It was usually a rifle or a shotgun that
was used to do the deed. There was a report last week about the raids
coordinated across southern Ontario by several police forces to attempt to
round up a large number of hand guns that had been smuggled into Canada from
Chicago. They managed to gather up 157 guns I believe along with a load of cash
from the sale of many of the weapons from that large shipment. Apparently some
gun shop owner in Chicago had his license to operate such a business taken away
for not keeping proper records. He was however allowed to keep all the guns in
the shop as part of his private collection. Good Lord! If this guy wasn’t
keeping proper records of what make the guns were, how many he’d sold and to
whom, did the authorities just take his word for it that all the guns in the
shop were his private collection and let him take them home? These 1500 guns
(everything from a 6 shot revolver to a case or two of Mac 10 machine guns)
were driven across the Ambassador Bridge in a tractor trailer with no problem
at all. Where are these new super XRay machines that we’re hearing about that
can see through the walls of these truck trailers? I guess the border guards
are too busy worrying how much liquor we’re bringing across to look for
weapons. Or maybe they’re being paid to look the other way, who knows?
I was also shocked to hear about the
murder in Cambridge the other day. It happened at a meat packing plant where a
disgruntled worker stabbed another over some petty argument. What is it that
makes people these days think it’s the right or noble thing to do to take physical
action against someone who ticks them off? I shouldn’t generalize but when this
sort of crime takes place the perpetrator more often than not has a “middle
eastern” sounding name. There are countries in this world where the “honorable”
thing to do when someone insults you or your sister is to KILL the person that
uttered the insult. Where the HELL does this attitude come from? That’s just
plain and simple barbarism! Unfortunately these barbaric practices are being
imported into our civilized country along with the immigration flow and nobody
takes the time to check the background of would be murderers as they bring
their ass backwards traditions along with them. Now I know many of you are
thinking “C’mon now Greg, there are bad people right here in Canada without
blaming the immigration program!” and I agree that to a degree, this is true.
However, you also must agree that anyone of any race or background that is born
and raised right here in Canada is taught from no age that it is wrong to
settle your personal differences with violence. This sort of eye for an eye
mentality is just not acceptable here in North America or any other civilized
nation on earth. The countries that say otherwise are WRONG to teach their
people any different. If they think they are right and we should mind our own
business and not tell them how to act, then the people of such countries (or
religions) should be banned from emigrating to Canada. We neither need nor want
that sort of inhabitant living here in our “civilized” country. After all,
isn’t that exactly what we are trying to put an end to over in Afghanistan at
this very moment? I hate to think that
we have to resort to killing to put an end to killing through terrorism but
unfortunately that’s what happens when you have to resist or try to stop a
violent organization from spreading throughout the world like a plague. We must
not give in to such evil thinking people!
Here’s
hoping that our law enforcement people stay on top of the trend toward violence
with handguns in our cities and continue to clean up the flow of such weapons
before they become common place in our society.
May God
bless and protect our law enforcement officers and our military people for
doing a very difficult and dangerous job on our behalf. Lets all pray for an
end to the wars in the Middle East real soon so we can bring our people home
alive and safe.
That’s it
for this week!
Thanks
for tuning in and I look forward to talking to you all again next time in The
Ontarion Report!
Good bye
for now.. Greg.
