Hi All,

I’m ticked. Turns out there is some sort of new holiday next week out here, something called family day. Apparently several other provinces already have this new statutory day off. I’m not ticked off that there is a holiday, I’m ticked that those of us that are retired don’t get to partake in a day off from work, a paid day off from work. We get totally ripped off. This is age and employment discrimination and I’m outraged. We deserve the same rights, privileges and treatment from our governments the everyone else recieves. Just because we are a bit older than the norm, and have been put out to pasture does not give anyone the right to deny us the benefits of the statutory holidays. I’m not just talking about this family day one, I think it’s a great idea although I do think that families should be mandated to actually ‘be’ a family on the designated day. I’m talking about all the stat holidays. We, the retired members of this society, must stand by as we watch the rest of the citizens be rewarded with paid days off. We, the retired members of society, must endure the thought that others are being paid for the holiday while we are ignored. No pay, nothing. No overtime, nothing. It is an outrage and I for one am ready to rise up in protest. I demand my day off.

Alas I feel my outrage will fall on deaf ears. No one I’ve talked to so far seems to care all that much about the plight of the retired being denied these holidays, with the exception of the retired people I’ve talked to. They alone can feel my pain because they also must endure this unfair treatment. While the non-retired majority dismiss our cries of ‘unfair’, and ignore the fact the we are truly offended, we are being minamalized and pushed aside. Enough I say. Statutory holidays for all, or statutory holidays for none. That is the only fair way to do things in a democracy. Down with all statutory holidays! Until we can all enjoy them, let no one enjoy them. I have said my piece.   ;)

Here’s a question… you can easily purchase toys for pets at almost any store. Pets, especially dogs, tend to like toys with squeakers in them. But most dogs, including ours, seem to be able to remove the squeaker  within minutes of getting their paws and teeth on the squeaky toy. So, how come you can by dozens of different toys with squeakers that don’t last very long, but you can’t buy a bag full of just the squeakers. That would be so useful and logical, imagine ever time your dog killed the squeaker in it’s latest most favorite toy, you could just insert a new squeaker and clean up the shredded pieces of plastic that are left from the old one, and then carry on. Just a thought.

Having said that, we actually found a squeaky toy that has been able to withstand the teeth and jaws of our dog, at least for now. And just so you know, we have had chew toys that were guaranteed to be indestructible with claims that no dog could destroy them. Willow managed to destroy the last one in under an hour. So it is quite amazing that this latest toy has lasted several days. But there is a down side. She gets all excited when playing with her toy and runs all around the house squeaking it, over and over and over and over. Drives us nuts, but, the dog is having fun. When she is done playing she is so tired that she sleeps the rest of the day, being a typical dog like she is. By the way, she doesn’t get ‘Family Day’ off either.

THE ONTARION REPORT

Hello everyone!

It’s Thursday evening and I’m writing my Ontarion early this week. I don’t expect to be able to type much for a while after my hand surgery tomorrow morning but I’ll keep in touch with shorter notes if things don’t heal as fast as I hope. Like I said last week, I can always ask Carole to type what I dictate but maybe I’ll be back in shape in time to peck something out myself again by next weekend.

We’re sitting here in KW awaiting the “big snow storm” the weather girl has predicted for our area and the rest of Southern Ontario for tonight and all day Friday. I say weather girl because our new weatherman that took over for Dave MacDonald last year has jumped ship and gone to do the same job for CBC in Ottawa. I guess he’s on his way up to bigger and better things. So, CTV Kitchener has hired a female weather reporter to take over for Ross Hull and this Friday’s “big snow storm” is her first big report. We’ll see how the prediction of the biggest storm so far this winter develops. Of course if it turns out to be a dud and we get little or no snow from the prediction, it won’t be her fault, we’ll just blame it on her predecessor or his stand-in that filled the spot between Ross Hull and the new girl. I don’t even know her name as of yet but she looks about 16 years old and I’m SURE she’s a very capable meteorologist with tons of experience packed into her extensive resume!

The heavy snowfall is supposed to start after midnight tonight (Thursday) and hit it’s peak by 2am and stay that way until Friday early evening. It’s supposed to drop up to 25 cm on Southern Ontario in that short period. I’m happy to say that we still have our 4x4 Jeep so getting to the hospital through the heavy snow shouldn’t be a problem for me. My hand is starting to get tightened up once again so I think I’ll cut it short for tonight. Seems like a good point to say good night and go have a nice mug of hot chocolate and a peanut buttered bun! I’ll be in touch again as soon as I have something to update you on concerning the hand. For those of you who live here in KW area or other parts of Southern Ontario here’s hoping you all make it through the storm safe and sound and keep warm!

That’s all for now folks!

Thanks for tuning in and I’ll look forward to talking to you all again next week in The Ontarion Report!

Bye for now… Greg
