Hi All,

Some of you actually noticed that this letter was a bit late arriving. Well, that’s because I didn’t get home until mid day today. Ryan and I were out on a 5 day motorcycle road trip. Had a great time, saw a lot of fantastic country. However, I won’t go into that now. I’ll deal with that in next week’s issue. Besides, there’s lots of other stuff to read here for now.

*

I never really believed in or paid much attention to conspiracy theories. However, now I’m not so sure. There have been a few that make a lot of sense and knowing how politics and big business work, and work together, anything is possible. And then there is Environment Canada…. BC and the west coast have just come through one of the coldest, wettest years on record. Everyone has been referring to the last few months as ‘the summer that wasn’t’. Even the meteorologist who gives the weather forecast on the local Vancouver news referred to it that way all along. Then, out of the blue, he announced that statistically speaking, our summer was actually hotter and dryer than normal. He even played a video of the Environment Canada head guy spewing that information. So, why the change in how the summer and year has been and where do they get their numbers. We all know that statistics can be made to give any results you want just by how the information is processed and evaluated. So, what’s going on? Almost no forest fires this year, it was way too wet and way too cold for them to start. Almost no tourist activity in Vancouver and on the coast, way too cold and wet for tourists. Way too cold and wet for anyone living out here to turn off their heating systems until well into July. Way too cold and wet for many of the agricultural crops to get planted and then reach maturity. So, what’s going on, why do the statistics all of a sudden contradict what anyone who even looked out a window knows.

It simply boils down to three things, bad science working with knee-jerk politics all at the beck and call of big business. Face it, there is a staggering amount of money to be made and a lot of power to be controlled in the name of global warming. You simply can not permit the facts contradict to the sermon. So, you change the facts. No one will notice, people have short memories and are stupid enough to let themselves be herded in whatever direction is convenient as long as nothing is permitted to distract them. Global warming is the single most lucrative industry in the world and it spans the world. Never mind that it ignores the fact that the globe has been warming, and cooling, back and forth since the beginning of the globe. Climate change is happening, because it always has happened and will continue to happen. We should be much more concerned about global poisoning because that is the real threat, but that’s is what the very International interests that make billions from the global warming nonsense want to distract us from. They make billions by doing nothing to actually clean up the place.

You know, when you hear some nonsense like “today was the hottest day in 100 years” and then along comes another sermon on good old GW, what they are not saying is that in fact, it has taken 100 years to warm up to where it was 100 years ago. We have some ‘receding ice fields’ high in the mountains right above us here where tree stumps have been found under the ice. The stumps have been dated at about 5,000 years old. The GW people are saying the ice is melting. Logic says it has taken 5,000 year to get almost as warm as it was 5,000 years ago. Almost because it would have a long way to go yet before any trees  could possible grow up there, way above the current tree line. And, 5,000 years before that, this whole area was under a mile of ice. Sounds like natural climate change to me.

So, ‘they’ are manipulating the data to come up with statistics that say our non-existent summer was hotter and dryer than normal. That way ‘they’ can continue to up our taxes and milk us for all ‘they’ can to fight the good fight against global warming, when actually, ‘they’ are just making some very rich, very powerful people even richer and more powerful. That, is my conspiracy theory and it makes perfect sense to me.

On Saturday, August 27th our place was the setting for a beautiful wedding.  Our son Gary and Evelyn were married in our west yard.  The day was perfect, the sun shining, and everyone looked lovely.  It couldn’t have been nicer.  After the ceremony everyone went to the church where the ladies had made a great dinner (and I didn’t even have to help).  I just enjoyed it all.  Evelyn’s family had made spring rolls for appetizers so the dinner was a combination of foods from two cultures.  Friends and family members entertained us with music after dinner.  We then returned to our place for the reception where Gary had hired live music.  Over the driveway was a very large tarp which acted as a canopy and we sat around round tables and chairs that had been rented for the occasion.  Beth did a wonderful job decorating the yard and the church basement, she could do this professionally!  We were lucky that our minister was willing to come to our place to perform the ceremony as it is not something he normally does.  So now all we have to do is wish Gary and Evelyn the best for their life together.

Lorne has gone up to Markdale so he and Gary can have their annual last fish of the season.  Hope they have luck as the fishing season ends and they haven’t had much fishing this year together.  They have a great day for it so they must be happy about that.  Hope they catch lots of fish as it will keep both of them in a good mood.  I don’t know when Lorne will come home but it is good for him to get away for a break (good for me also) as long as it is just for a day or two.  The house is quiet with Lorne away as the first thing he does when he wakes up is turn the radio on and as long as he is around the house the radio stays on.

We haven’t had to bother tying Teddy for a long time as he doesn’t bother to leave the place.  There is one person who walks past that Teddy always goes to the sidewalk to meet who always has a treat for Teddy, but he doesn’t go any further so it is nice that he can go free.  When Vivvy is here she loves to take Teddy for a walk in the bush and he loves it also.

October is sneaking up on us rather fast but as long as the weather is like today we can’t ask for anything better.  The lawns have staid nice this year except for that one spot that goes brown no matter what he does.  Beth has a birthday soon.  Maybe she doesn’t want to be reminded but we’ll wish her a “Happy Birthday” anyway.  It won’t be too long and Jackie will have one also.  It must be wonderful to be so young, if I even had the energy now that I had back then – but I guess I shouldn’t complain.  We are doing good when you think about how some people our age are doing.  We are lucky also when you think about our family that come and help us.

Love to all

THE ONTARION REPORT

Hello everyone!

I guess we’re into fall now that the leaves are dropping like, well, leaves in fall! LOL! I had occasion to blow a ton of them off our front lawn yesterday and it was kind of fun! Years ago I bought a gas powered leaf blower to clear debris off of driveways when I had a driveway sealing business. It was just a part time small (Very Small) business that I put together just for the fun of it. I had a 4x8 trailer and went to a liquid fertilizer company in New Hamburg to purchase a 500 imperial gallon plastic tank. I took that to a Mennonite friend of mine up in Linwood. He welded up a stand for the tank and mounted it in my trailer on a sheet of plywood so I could slide it in and out if I wanted to use the trailer for other things. It worked like a charm. He then accompanied me to Princess Auto in Kitchener and picked out a pump and spraying hose and nozzle for the job. I managed to find a used 6hp gas motor to drive the pump and the set up was complete! That’s when I purchased a few other accessories for the “company” and I was in business! You could buy the spray liquid out in Breslau at Reitzel Insulation so I bought my first 200 gallons to get started there. From that point on it was just a matter of knocking on doors to round up a few customers. My Mennonite friend has a patch of asphalt parking lot that he let me practice on to hone my skills and I was on the way to great things! I had the set up for two years and it was fun while it lasted but I soon tired of it since there wasn’t much money in it and it was a sticky mess to clean up after every job. I managed to make enough money to pay off my equipment in the first month of working at it but I was out from dawn till dusk every day I had off work to recoup my investment. Most people I did work for were nice but almost every one of them wanted the spraying done for nothing! It made me wonder how so many of these companies seamed to be thriving every summer. I managed to stay at it for two years but in the end the money I made amounted to about $5.00 an hour when I broke it down! It certainly didn’t make me rich and in the end it became obvious that it wasn’t worth the effort to keep it going. I placed an ad in the Equipment Trader and within a couple of days I had a buyer. He lived across from Schneider’s Meats on Courtland Ave in Kitchener and asked me to deliver the system to him. He paid me $2500.00 for the system and when I took it over to him, he didn’t want the trailer, just the system. So we slid the plywood base, stand and all off my trailer into his old pickup truck and he was in business. He told me he didn’t think the trailer was part of the deal and he was happy to pay the money just to get the system so, I still owned my trailer and finally made a profit on the spraying company just by selling the whole deal in a lump! He was happy and so was I!

In the end, I kept the blower and a couple of brooms I used in the business and still have them to this day. That all took place way back in the mid 90’s and every time I see one of those guys spraying a driveway, I look to see if it’s the same guy that bought my business from me but so far the sale day was the one and only time I ever laid eyes on the guy! I hope he managed to make more money than I did spraying driveways, it wasn’t a very lucrative business but I guess if you were at it full time you might have made a go of it! Anyway, the remnants of that business are why I haven’t had to rake leaves for the past 15 years and that makes me happy!

I still use the leaf blower every time I finish mowing the lawn to clear the grass clipping off the sidewalk. It’s a lot easier than sweeping them off with a broom! This time of year I also blow the leaves off the lawn and onto the street along the curb. The first few times I did this I swept and bagged the leaves into those large leaf bags you see on the curb on garbage days. One time I left the leaves at the curb over night and by morning the next day, they were gone! I realized that the traffic passing by created enough wind to blow the leaves down the street and scatter them so they were hardly noticeable. Good enough for me! I still blow them to the curb and most times within a day or so they’re gone bye-bye and my problem of bagging them is gone bye-bye too!

So, if you’re tired of raking leaves, get yourself a good leaf blower and have some fun!

That’s it for this week folks!

Thanks for tuning in and I’ll look forward to talking to you all again next week in The Ontarion Report!

Bye for now… Greg.

There are only four words in the English language which end in “dous”:  tremendous, horrendous, stupendous and hazardous.
